How old do I have to be to hire a van from you?
For van hire, drivers must be between 25 and 74 years old. You must have held a full UK-license for 2 years before you can hire from us.
What ID do I need to hire a van?
To collect your vehicle, please ensure you have the following original documents with you:
UK Driving Licence: Your original photocard. If you hold an old-style paper licence, you must also bring your valid passport for identity verification.
DVLA Check Code: A “Check Code” or a PDF summary generated within 21 days of your hire. You can obtain this at gov.uk/view-driving-licence.
Note: Please have your National Insurance number handy in case we need to generate a new code for you on arrival.
Secondary Proof of Address: Required for new customers, those who haven’t hired from us in over 12 months, or those who have recently moved. This must be a utility bill or bank statement dated within the last 3 months. The address must match your driving licence. If you have recently moved, please bring proof of your new address.
Note: We are unable to accept mobile phone bills.
Proof of ID & Payment: A valid passport or a signed credit/debit card in the driver’s name. The signature must match your licence. If the card is used for payment, the cardholder must be present in person to authorise the transaction.
Can I hire a van with points or endorsements?
If you have more than 6 points for speeding or any other endorsements, bans, or fines, then please contact the office in advance of making a hire. Insurance, drink, or drug-related endorsements are particularly hard for us to insure.
Does hiring a van include insurance?
Unless we say otherwise, there is a £1000 accidental damage insurance excess for our vans. This is the maximum liability for which you will be liable. Please note that this excludes ‘negligent damage’, which will be paid in full for repairs and relevant costs. If you opt into the collision damage waiver, the excess is reduced to £650. Should you choose to return the vehicle out of office hours, you will remain liable for the vehicle and any damage incurred, up until a team member has completed a post-rental inspection.
Do you offer long-term hire?
Yes, for van hire that is over 28 days, please visit: TSP Vehicle Solutions.
What vehicle will I receive when booking?
You may not always receive the exact vehicle that you are looking for in terms of make and model when hiring, but we provide vehicles from the same class, so that you have the type of vehicle that you need to hire. Sometimes you may also be upgraded depending on availability. If you need the specific registration number for car parking and other reasons, please call the office the week before you are due to hire the vehicle, and we will provide this to you.
Can I use your van hire for anything?
Please note that we do not permit van hire for courier use. Apart from this, there is a wide range of potential uses for our vans, and we permit these so that you can use your van for any task that you need. The main tasks include transporting furniture as well as supporting you with everyday tasks for your business. Apart from not being permitted for courier work, you have the freedom to use your van how you see fit and for whatever you need.
How do I adjust driving positioning properly?
When you first obtain your van and are unfamiliar with its layout and positioning, ensure that your seating position is comfortable and correct before setting out. Adjust your seat for comfort and ensure that you have set your mirrors properly for maximum view. The main difference is that a van is much larger than a car, so you will need to rely on your side mirrors. Also, remember that your blind spot is significantly larger, so you need to check it more frequently in a van than in a car.
What other steps should I take before setting off?
Ensure that you are familiar with where the lights, wipers, and different controls are located before you set off. Make sure that you have a clear route, and if you have hired a larger van, be aware of height restrictions, narrow roads, and other considerations, especially if your suggested route changes for whatever reason. For first-time drivers, if you are worried about driving a significantly larger vehicle, find a quiet spot to practice before heading out on the busier parts of the road and beginning your journey.
What advice do you have for handling and driving?
Remember that the van is going to be slower and have a longer stopping distance, especially when it’s almost or fully loaded. Take significantly more time when breaking than in a smaller vehicle to ensure that you can brake safely. Take corners a lot wider and slower to avoid kerbs and other issues, such as body roll (leaning to one side). Empty vans will be a lot lighter and bouncier, so be aware of the change when the van is loaded. Depending on the weight of the van you hire, you may have reduced speed limits on all major types of roads and areas, so be aware of this. Remember to stay calm, give yourself plenty of time, and learn the van if you need to before setting out on your main journeys.
How can I be more comfortable driving a van for the first time?
It’s important not to stress and to prepare yourself before setting off if you are a first-time driver. Modern vans have a lot more technology that makes them similar to driving a car, with the main differences being the height of the vehicle and its size. Take it slow if you are worried about driving a van for the first time, practice in a quiet area if you need to, and ensure that you have adjusted your mirrors and you are as familiar and comfortable as possible in your sitting position. Driving a van may seem daunting at first, but it’s actually easier than you may think once you get behind the wheel. Make sure to consider that the van will drive differently when loaded, and you will then get a lot more comfortable driving, and in the future.
When may I need to hire a van as a first-time or new van driver?
Hiring a van can save you a lot more time and money than having to use another company for moves. If you don’t have a huge amount of items to move, then a van is a better choice for many, as you can choose when to pick it up, how long you need it for, and you can use it for everything that you need when you need it. Van hire is a great solution for transporting items for first-time drivers, where you don’t want to pay for a removal service or only have a few items to transport.
How can I avoid damaging the van as a first-time driver?
One of the biggest causes of stress when driving a van for the first time, or if you are inexperienced, is damaging the van, especially if you are hiring it. It’s important to be very careful when driving and to take everything slowly rather than rushing. You need to prioritise knowing the van’s exact height and width, and take corners wide and brake much earlier, especially with increased weight in the van itself. Use your mirrors constantly to monitor the rear of the van and make sure that items are securely fastened when transporting to protect the inside of the van.
What special considerations do I need to make when driving a van?
Modern vans are actually very similar to driving cars. You just need to make sure that you are accounting for the fact that the van is going to be heavier, larger, and will take longer to brake as a result. The van will also be lighter when it isn’t full, so you are effectively driving two different vehicles when light and when loaded.
Is a van more difficult to drive than a car?
Modern vans are a lot more similar to cars in their operation and performance. Vans are more difficult to drive because they are heavier, the positioning is different, and you need to adapt to using only your mirrors for vision.
What are the main benefits of hiring a van?
Flexibility – Van hire is very flexible, so whether you need to hire a van for a day, for a few days, or for long-term hire, we have you covered.
Great Value For Money – If you are hiring a van for transportation purposes or only need a van for a set period of time, van hire is exceptional value for money. You don’t have to pay transportation fees or go through the stress of moving with third parties when you handle it yourself, and often, if you want a task done properly, then you should do it yourself.
Convenience – There are many reasons as to why you may need a van, from transportation to transporting a larger number of people or for business logistics. Whatever your need for a van is, van hire is very convenient and gives you access to larger vehicles easily. The process is simple with our team to ensure that you can pick up a great van for your requirements.
Access to a Range of Vans for What You Need – All of our vans are expertly maintained, and we provide full breakdown cover as standard unless the breakdown is due to negligence or tyre damage. There are many different reasons as to why you may need a van, so that’s why we have a range of vans to suit you, and we can also advise you on the best van for your requirements. Vans are also available whenever you need them.
What use cases are there for hiring a van?
For commercial clients or businesses, hiring a van can be used for a project in which you need a larger vehicle but don’t have access to one in your fleet, or you only have a few vans. It’s also a quick and simple process, highly cost-effective, and gives you access to the vans you need for a range of projects. Examples include a logistical project in which you need a larger van for the collection or delivery of large items, such as furniture or antiques, or for office moves or moving premises.
For personal use, you may be moving home or need to transport large items or collect them. You may have equipment for a hobby where you don’t have the space in your car, and therefore need a van. There are a lot of reasons as to why you may want to hire a van, and they are a great method to transport larger objects and move larger amounts or heavier items from A to B.
What are the benefits of van hire vs leasing or finance / purchasing outright?
Owning a van (finance or outright), leasing a van and hiring a van are the main ways of obtaining a new or used van in Newcastle. Van hire is a fantastic choice for shorter agreements, where you aren’t tied to the van that you are obtaining with yearly contracts or with cashflow or capital into the van itself (when owned outright). Van hire allows you to very quickly obtain a van without being tied into any long-term contract or having to pay for a van with capital to control cash flow, making it a great choice for businesses that need a van for whatever reason without adding it to their fleet.
Similarly, for personal/private hire, you likely don’t have a van or want to acquire one if you don’t need it every day or want to obtain one. Van hire gives you access to a van for whatever you need for a short period of time, rather than being tied into a long-term contract, with owning a van just not being a viable investment if you don’t need a van regularly or all the time / daily use. From hiring a van for transportation, to having space available for equipment for hobbies or needing this for events and moving heavy objects, van hire is the most cost-effective, most flexible and most straightforward way to obtain a van.

We can also extend the hire depending on availability if you call us while you are hiring the van, if you need it for longer. We aim to make the process as flexible and stress-free as possible to suit you.
How does van hire make my business look more professional?
If you have access to vans when you need them, then you will look more professional, and you will be able to complete more tasks and jobs for your business and/or for clients. This allows you to complete more work and generate more revenue while looking professional.
